Manchester United’s Scott McTominay would be a ‘super signing’ for Premier League rivals Newcastle amid claims that a £40 million move to St James’ Park could be on the cards, former England international Danny Murphy tells talkSPORT (22 March, 12.20pm).
If Erik ten Hag learned anything from Sunday’s dramatic 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final victory over a combusting Fulham, it’s that McTominay is clearly not the answer to United’s midfield issues when Casemiro is unavailable.
The Scotland colossus struggled big-time in that ‘number six’ role against Marco Silva’s fired-up Cottagers; lacking the technique, or perhaps the confidence, to dictate play and break the lines from that deep-lying position.
So any Newcastle supporters who tuned into that dramatic clash at Old Trafford may be wondering why, per The Athletic, Eddie Howe is such a big fan of a player valued by Man United in the £40 million bracket.
Howe, however, is proving himself more than capable of coaxing career-best performances out of athletic, physical but-technically limited footballers. See Joelinton, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff, for example.
And Murphy, who represented Tottenham, Liverpool and Fulham in England’s top-flight, believes Howe’s high-intensity, up-and-at-’em approach may suit McTominay more than Ten Hag’s controlled style.
Will Scott McTominay leave Manchester United for Newcastle?“I think he’s perfect (for Newcastle),” says Murphy.
“Some players have qualities which suit a manager’s philosophy. United want to play a different way under Ten Hag. He likes possession; technically-gifted footballers who dictate play. Eddie Howe likes to play a different way, and I think it makes sense.”
McTominay, according to The Telegraph, has been on Newcastle’s radar for over a year; Howe a big admirer of the Carrington graduate’s physical attributes. McTominay has played 32 times for Man United under Ten Hag but appears the most likely to make way if a more cerebral midfielder arrives at Old Trafford in the summer.
“I like him a lot. I actually thing he gets a bit of unfair criticism at times,” Murphy adds. “For the way Eddie Howe plays, he is perfect. He’s super athletic, box-to-box, really hard-working, good at spotting danger, decent with the ball.
“You could argue they’ve got Longstaff who fits that role but you’re talking about a club hoping to be in the Champions League, which means you play high quality games. They need competition for places. I think McTominay would be a super signing for them.
