Aston Villa have now done something that no other Premier League side has managed to achieve in the history of the competition.

The Villans are in dreamland right now under Unai Emery as they sit fifth in the Premier League, a remarkable accomplishment given the fact they languished in 14th when Steven Gerrard was sacked in October.

So, what is the historic achievement? Let’s take a look…

Aston Villa set Premier League record

After Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Fulham, Aston Villa have now become the first Premier League side on record to score in their first 20 games under a new manager.

The Villans have scored 35 goals in those 20 Premier League outings under the Spaniard, which is more than some sides have scored all season.

Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, West Ham, Wolves and even Chelsea have scored fewer than that tally across the entire 2022/23 Premier League campaign so far.

It has been a remarkable run under Emery since he began his time at Villa Park with an impressive 3-1 win over Manchester United back on Sunday 6th November.

One thing should annoy Aston Villa about Premier League record

While Aston Villa fans should quite rightly be basking in their side’s current run of form, there is one thing that should irritate them about it.

Gerrard was, quite clearly, underperforming significantly in the Midlands, and had he been replaced by Emery sooner, Aston Villa could easily be sitting in the Champions League qualification positions right now.

As things stand, the Villans find themselves fifth in the Premier League, five points off the top four albeit with three more games played than Manchester United, who are fourth.

Had Gerrard done a little bit better before losing his job – although not enough to avoid the sack – a place in the Champions League would have been far more realistic for Aston Villa under Emery.

It is still possible – of course – but even if Aston Villa fail to secure a place in the top four this season, next term is looking very promising indeed with the right investment this summer.
