Ian Wright and Michael Owen were critical of Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson for the role they played during Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.
The only joy for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool came early in the first half when Mohamed Salah sweetly timed a stunning first-time effort into the top corner.
But that was short-lived because, ten or so minutes later, the champions of England were level again after a well-worked goal involving Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish and goalscorer Julian Alvarez.
After superb defensive work from Manchester City’s £100 million man, he was moments later, serving the ball on a plate for Alvarez, who had come into the XI for the injured Erling Haaland, to level the scores.
But, from Liverpool’s perspective, they were a yard off every pass this slick, quick-moving and quick-thinking Man City side were making.
It started with Andy Robertson on one flank, before the damage was caused on the other, with Ian Wright and Michael Owen being critical, as they told Premier League Productions (01/04/23 at 1:30 pm).
“Harvey Elliott has now got to realise (the danger of Grealish), Virgil has got to come across because we have seen Andy Robertson come in and taken a chance (to press de Bruyne),” said Wright.
“Once this goes into him (de Bruyne). He (Elliott) has to recognise. He has to get out to Jack (on the other flank). He has to do something to stop that. He doesn’t do it. He’s still not there, then in this situation (before Grealish’s cross to Alvarez), they are kind of at Man City’s mercy. If Harvey Elliott showed the same determination as Grealish, then he might be able to stop that.”
Owen added: “If Elliott recognised it earlier, he could be here (closer to Grealish). Trent Alexander-Arnold says he has to come across because there has been a problem here (on the other flank).
“Andy Robertson has gone and squeezed, then it has had a knock-on effect. Trent has to come across (when the ball is switched to the other flank) to defend it, so I don’t blame Trent in any way.”
LIVERPOOL NEED THE SEASON TO END.
Sitting eighth in the Premier League table, this is a season to forget for all associated with the Merseyside club, who just probably want it all to end.
They might end up losing Champions League football, but it’s a pill they have to swallow.
To be brutally honest, it’s something the club don’t deserve based on this season’s performances, unless they pull off a madness during the final few months.
