Diogo Jota has shared that he apologised to Oliver Skipp for his possible red card challenge during Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at Anfield.
The Liverpool forward, who ended up scoring a dramatic for Jurgen Klopp’s side, admitted that his high boot to Oliver Skipp’s face ‘wasn’t good’, but he didn’t intend to hurt the Spurs player.
On the touchline, Ryan Mason was screaming for a red card, but Diogo Jota only received a yellow before he cancelled out Richarlison’s equaliser in a quiet stunning finish on Merseyside.
It was a barn-storming game, which started with the home side going 3-0 up inside 15 minutes, before the substitutes made the difference, for the right and wrong reasons.
From Richarlison’s first Premier goal for Spurs to Lucas Moura’s costly back pass to Jota, it had it all.
But should the 26-year-old goalscorer have been on the pitch, well, he certainly feels it wasn’t a red card challenge because he ‘touched the ball’, as he told Premier League Productions (30/04/23 at 6:40 pm).
“It wasn’t good,” said Jota. “It’s not my intention to cause any harm to him.
“But, unfortunately, it happens. I (said) sorry, that’s all I could do after that bad tackle. I also think it’s not a red because I touched the ball.”
RIGHT CALL MADE
If players can’t raise their boots anymore to control the ball, poke it away or take an acrobatic shot, then the game is really gone.
Jota didn’t intend to boot Skipp in the face, he wanted to go for the ball and just found a very gutsy and all-action Skipp putting his head where it hurts.
In the end, the right call was made, but it’s not going to sit well with Spurs supporters because that very same player ended up scoring the winner.
