Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Burnley’s Vincent Kompany in recent weeks.
Last week, The Sun reported that Spurs had made the ‘unbelievable‘ manager their No. 1 candidate.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, there is growing support behind the scenes for Kompany to get the Tottenham gig.
Indeed, those in favour of the Belgian’s appointment reportedly feel he could become their own Mikel Arteta.
The Arsenal job is the Spaniard’s first managerial role. Prior to getting the job, he was a coach at Manchester City.
Despite his lack of experience, Arteta has overhauled Arsenal and turned them into Premier League title contenders.
The Tottenham board members who support Kompany appointment feel he could potentially do the same at N17.
Indeed, the 37-year-old has more managerial experience than Arteta had when he took the Arsenal job.
Kompany has a full season at Burnley under his belt, and also spent two years as head coach of Anderlecht.
Our view
Admittedly, it’s a pretty good argument in favour of Tottenham appointing Kompany.
Arteta transformed Arsenal despite having no prior experience as a head coach, so why can’t another young coach?
However, Tottenham and their fans would need to be patient with Kompany if they appoint him.
It took Arteta several years to get Arsenal to this level, with plenty of hurdles and poor performances along the way.
That said, Tottenham could certainly do with a major overhaul, even if it means a couple of seasons in the wilderness.
In addition, it remains to be seen whether Kompany is willing to take the plunge at Spurs this summer.
After all, he has taken Burnley back up into the Premier League, and he may well want to get at least one Premier League season under his belt at Turf Moor.
The Clarets will probably give him much more leeway to find his feet in the top flight. Surviving relegation will likely be their primary target.
Meanwhile, the pressure will probably be on at Tottenham to make Europe and enjoy a good cup run.
