» » » ’They're rewarding him’: Merson reacts to contract claim involving 'outstanding' Arsenal ace

Paul Merson has lauded the ‘absolutely amazing’ Bukayo Saka who he thinks is deserving of a new Arsenal contract.

There are suggestions that Bukayo Saka will be handed a new bumper deal by Arsenal – Sky presenter Jeff Stelling says it could be worth £300k-a-week.

If those rumours are to be true, then Paul Merson thinks it’s deserving for the 21-year-old and, if Arsenal want to ‘kick on’ during these next five years, then they need to tie down their best players for the long term.

There is no doubt that Arsenal’s Hale-End academy product falls into that category, it’s just a case of whether he is the first name on the team sheet.

From captain Martin Odegaard to the hard-hitting midfielder Thomas Partey, many players could argue that they are the first name on Mikel Arteta’s team sheet.

But Saka, who is the first player to hit double figures in goals and assists in the Premier League this season, is probably the first name that is written down when that ink touches the paper.

Either way, amid talk of a new contract for the star boy, Paul Merson is backing it to go through, as he told Sky Sports News (01/04/23 at 2:50 pm).

“To be fair, the kid is very good.,” said Merson. “Saka is a big moment player. They are rewarding him for what he has done. He has done unbelievable for them.

“If they want to build, then they have to put their money with their mouth is. They have got to (give Saka a new deal) and fair play to them.

“The thing I like about this lad is, number one his temperament and he is a big moment player. He scores the first goal, the equalising goal or the winner. He never gets the fourth or fifth goal in a 5-0 win.

“He is absolutely amazing – I don’t see a reason why he shouldn’t (get the contract). He deserves it. He has been outstanding. If Arsenal want to kick on and be there for the next five and six years, then they have to tie their best players down.”

ARSENAL REST SAKA

Due to illness, Saka wasn’t risked from the start as Arsenal breezed past relegation-threatened Leeds United 4-1 on Saturday.

Ahead of their trip to Anfield at the weekend, it’s a move that paid off by Arteta and a much-needed rest for his star winger.

As Paul Merson mentioned, Saka is a big game player, well, it’s time for him to cook again and produce at Anfield and a ground Arteta has openly admitted is intimidating to play at.
