Darren Bent has backed Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse to secure a summer transfer to West Ham United over Tottenham Hotspur.
The former Tottenham striker added that James Ward-Prowse, who was relegated to the Championship with Southampton, is a ‘quality player’, as he told talkSPORT Drive (30/05/23 at 5:20 pm).
With West Ham set to lose Declan Rice, then Bent has tipped David Moyes’ side to bring in Ward-Prowse with the money that they earn from his possible sale.
Despite the 28-year-old having a season to forget for a Saints team that finished bottom of the Premier League pile this term.
One player that can probably hold his head high is Ward-Prowse, who according to Pep Guardiola is the best set-piece specialist in the world.
For Bent, he backed the England Intentional to move to the London Stadium.
“£40 million is not bad, to be fair, for someone of his quality,” said Bent. “West Ham could do with that, especially if they are going to lose Declan. I would take that.
On if he could join Spurs: “Yes, I think there are a number of teams he could go to. All kind of levels, not Man City. He is a quality player, James Ward-Prowse. If West Ham can get him, fair play.”
WARD-PROWSE WOULD BE A SMART PURCHASE
Well, Southampton are in a difficult position now because they can’t ask for the inflated transfer fee they would have got for Ward-Prowse had they still been a Premier League team.
That opens the door for interested parties to nab him at a very decent price.
From his ability to play in a two-man midfield, his reliability with the ball, his energy and world-class skills during dead-ball situations, he would be a very smart purchase for either West Ham or Spurs this summer.
