While OpenAI was valued at $29 billion at the start of 2023 thanks to Microsoft’s investment, its CEO, Sam, is reportedly not a billionaire yet.
Despite, the AI laboratory’s growing value, the 38-year-old entrepreneur reportedly did not take any equity in the OpenAI. This means that he apparently did not earn much from the company’s private valuation.

Sam co-founded the company with Elon in 2015 with the help of various investors. They pledged over $1 billion to the laboratory.
There’s a for-profit corporation called OpenAI LP and a non-profit OpenAI Inc. The laboratory was opened with the aim of creating an AI that is friendly and helpful toward humanity.
Before venturing into the AI business, Sam, a Chicago native, opened a geo-tracking company named Loopt in 2005. At just 19, he dropped out of college to start his own business.
The company provided a geosocial networking mobile application that helped people share their locations with others.
Tech executive urges Congress for AI regulation
Testifying before Congress at Capitol Hill on May 16, the OpenAI CEO expressed his fears over the technology potentially causing harm to humanity. He said: “My worst fear is we cause significant harm to the world.”
“If this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong,” he said.
He also surprised many after urging lawmakers to regulate his industry, something no other CEO has done before.
He suggested that there should be a brand new agency to regulate AI. The CEO also suggested that the said agency must license the development of large-scale AI models, and also do independent auditing, and have testing requirements.
