David Ornstein has said that reported Arsenal target Ilkay Gundogan could leave Manchester City as a free agent at the end of the season.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona.

According to a report in Spanish publication SPORT in March, Arsenal are trying to sign Gundogan on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

The report claimed interest in the German star from Barcelona as well.

City manager Pep Guardiola has publicly said that he wants his bosses to hand the German midfielder a new contract.

However, as of now, according to The Athletic journalist Ornstein on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, the 32-year-old has not agreed a new deal with City.

Ornstein said about Gundogan: “His contractual situation dictates that it’s open. Nothing is finalised, to my knowledge.

“We reported in the Monday column on The Athletic that there are no agreements in place with Barcelona, with Manchester City or anybody else.

“Clearly, if Manchester City haven’t got to an agreement with him at this late stage, then it’s obviously in jeopardy.”

Could Arsenal sign Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City?

In our view, Arsenal may not be able to sign Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City in the summer transfer window.

We do not think that the Germany international midfielder will leave City for another Premier League club, especially Arsenal who have pushed the Citizens all the way in the title race this season.

Barcelona have won the La Liga title this season and will aim to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League next campaign.

Having succeeded in Germany and England, the £165,000-a-week (SalarySport) Gundogan could be tempted to move to Barcelona and win trophies in Spin as well.
