Paul Merson has picked Newcastle United defender Sven Botman in his Premier League Team of the Season.
The Dutch centre-back has been a revelation since joining Eddie Howe’s side in the summer and has undoubtedly been one of the best players in his position this campaign.
Amongst superstars like Erling Haaland, Bukayo Saka and Kevin De Bruyne, Paul Merson has also opted for Sven Botman in his Premier League Team of the Season.

The Ligue 1 winner has been a rock at the back, as his expert positioning and impressive reading of the game are traits that have instantly stood out.
But perhaps most impressively, Botman is simply sensational on the ball, ticking all the boxes to develop into an elite central defender in the near future.
Paul Merson lavished praise on to Newcastle’s Sven Botman as he picked him in his Premier League Team of the Season.
“He’s been absolutely outstanding. For him to come in to a new country and a new league and do what he’s done, has been brilliant. He has made the players around him better. He defends so well. Newcastle don’t give you a sniff anymore and he marshals that back four in my opinion”, he told GiveMeSport.
HITC View: Botman certainly deserves a spot in the side
With a number of top performing defenders in the league this season, it feels unfair to leave any player out.
However, Sven Botman has commanded his place in the Premier League Team of the Season picked by Paul Merson.
The Magpies have conceded the least number of goals in the English top-flight this campaign with just 27 in 33 games and the 23-year-old’s excellence at the back is a major reason behind that.
For context, league leaders Manchester City have conceded 30 whilst having played an extra game, while Arsenal have let in 39.
With that in mind, a Newcastle centre-back certainly merited a place in the side and if it was not Fabian Schar, it’s only right that it was his partner-in-crime.
