Aston Villa and West Ham United have landed a boost amid their interest in a transfer for AC Milan striker Divock Origi. But the Villans must overtake the Irons for any move.
That is according to Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWEB, as the Italian outlet reports the Belgian will favour a return to the Premier League over his alternative destinations. The Rossoneri are already contemplating offloading Origi after just one campaign with the club.
AC Milan moved fast to sign Origi last summer with the Serie A team announcing his arrival on July 5. Liverpool opted the let the striker leave Anfield for free at the end of his contract. He walked away from Merseyside after scoring 41 and assisting 18 goals in his 175 outings.
West Ham lead the Premier League interest in Divock Origi
Origi also helped Liverpool win the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup over the 28-year-old’s seven years there. But his time in Italy has been torrid to date. The 32-cap international has only scored twice and laid on one assist over 35 fixtures.
Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli has also only started the Belgian in 10 of his appearances this season across all competitions. Each of his starts also came in Serie A but he has not scored since January 29. So, AC Milan chiefs may well let Origi go when the transfer window starts.
Besiktas and Galatasaray have already made contact to discuss a potential transfer for Origi this summer. But the forward would prefer to return to the Premier League with West Ham leading the English interest in him. Some unnamed Premier League clubs have also moved.
Aston Villa are also interested in the AC Milan striker’s transfer
Reports by TuttoMercatoWEB earlier this week also cited West Ham’s interest in a transfer from AC Milan for Origi. But it also credited Aston Villa as a potential suitor for the forward. While it noted that San Siro chiefs are evaluating his future given his underwhelming term.
AC Milan might not demand a high fee for the forward, who Jurgen Klopp called ‘fantastic’, as well. The Rossoneri recognise that Origi earns a high salary at €4m-a-year (£67k-a-week) net, plus bonuses. He also agreed to sign a four-year contract to move to San Siro in 2022.
