After Grimace’s reputation was ripped apart by a crazy social media trend that saw many re-enact crime scenes while blaming the milkshake inspired by the fictional character, people are swooning over a made-up baby picture of the McDonald’s mascot.

Enough and more has been talked about the TikTok challenge, which created more buzz than the McDonald‘s mascot that inspired it, as it made a comeback for its 52nd anniversary in 2023. But, Grimace goes way back, having his features and character tweaked over the years.

‘Baby Grimace’ picture is too adorable

As if the purple blob wasn’t a fan favorite already, a picture showing the baby version of Grimace is melting hearts on TikTok, as users can’t get enough of the tiny mascot.

The baby Grimace is no different from the adult version, except for being smaller in size and having a McDonald’s cap on his head.

While some pictures of Grimace in a few TikToks look authentic as they appear as if they were taken back in the day when Grimace was way younger and just introduced, others show him a tad bit tensed from all the blame he’s received for the scary trend.

One TikTok consisting of a GIF featuring baby Grimace has been viewed close to 300,000 times as the caption reads “poor grimace” and you can see a worried crease on his face at the mention of the viral challenge. The video concludes with “sorry” on the display, implying he’s apologizing for the imaginary deaths.

For the unversed, as a part of the infamous Grimace Shake challenge, social media users, mostly youngsters, would find themselves lying on the floor after drinking the milkshake, with the purple beverage poured on and around them.

The “grime” scene shows some playing dead while a few other participants resorted to indulging in the strangest of activities like shoving themself in a garbage can or trying to climb a tree.

TikTok users sympathize with the McDonald’s mascot

The majority of TikTok users and Grimace’s fans think he didn’t deserve to be blamed for the social media challenge driven by stupidity or fun, as he had nothing to do with it. People are defending baby Grimace because he was created to add joy to the customer experience and not scare them away.

One wrote: “I love Grimace so much it breaks my heart that people are blaming him for celebrating his birthday he did nothing wrong.”

“Why this is so sad! He just wanted to share his birthday with us,” said another.

A third fan wrote: “Grimace is such a cutie patootie I love him so much. I’m getting his shake and going to his bday and omg”

Fictional character was introduced in the 1970s

Grimace was advertised as “evil” when he was first introduced by McDonald’s in the early 1970s. He came with four arms then. The fictional character would swipe all of the cups from McDonaldland to stop customers from drinking milkshakes and cola.

But, when the original image seemed to scare young customers away, the brand reduced the number of his arms to two and made him look softer, like a “blob of a sweetheart who only wanted McDonald’s milkshakes and to hang out with Ronald.”

It established Grimace meant different to each individual, but popularly, he is believed to be “an enormous taste bud, but a taste bud nonetheless,” a manager of McDonald’s in Canada, Brian Bates, revealed in 2021.

McDonald’s offered more clarity on Grimace’s image in its statement to PEOPLE that read: “Whether he’s a taste bud, a milkshake or just your favorite purple blob – the best part about Grimace is that he means different things to different people. Whatever he is, we’re just proud our bestie makes people happy.”
