Portsmouth are prepared to write off around £200,000 as they look to offload Sunderland academy product Denver Hume.

The News have reported that Pompey are desperate to sell the former Sunderland defender and are prepared to sanction a cut-price exit.

Hume joined Portsmouth from Sunderland in January 2022 and he has since failed to impress at Fratton Park, making only four starts in League One last season.

With only a year left on his current deal, the club have accepted his decreasing transfer value and will accept a ‘rock bottom’ fee to get Hume off their books this summer.

The 24-year-old’s representatives are currently exploring a summer exit, while the report claims that interest in Hume is coming from League Two.

It’s unclear whether the full-back would drop down to the fourth tier, having been with the Black Cats since they were relegated from the Premier League.

Why has Denver Hume gone downhill since his Sunderland exit?

Denver Hume’s downfall is the perfect example of Sunderland’s standards in their first few seasons in League One.

The defender made 56 league appearances in the two seasons prior to his move south and was rarely ever tested as their first choice left-back.

However, it wasn’t until the club began welcoming talents such as Dennis Cirkin and Callum Doyle into the squad that Hume’s level was discovered.

The Ashington-born youngster was only really praised for his speed and his occasional quality cross, while he was often let off for terrible performances because he was ‘one of our own’.

Now that Hume is hours from home, he is struggling to meet the potential that he once had at the Stadium of Light.

While certainly not good enough for the Black Cats, Hume was a likeable character and definitely isn’t one that fans would want to see falling down the leagues.
