Shaka Hislop says Newcastle United aren’t going to buy Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane because they are doing things in a ‘sensible’ manner.

Despite being the wealthiest team in the Premier League, Hislop added that Newcastle United ‘aren’t going to financially compete right now with Manchester United‘ and buy players like Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, as he told ESPN.

A lot of that will be down to FFP restrictions and the Magpies still trying to build their way up again, after all, this is the first time they are in the Champions League after two decades.

But many expect them to stay where they are, or in actual fact, probably take steps forward again and do what Manchester City and Chelsea do and that is spend their way to trophies.

Whilst money has been put down on the table, including breaking the club’s transfer record and they might go again with Sandro Tonali, it has perhaps been a more laid-back approach than most expected.

It’s worked a treat because it has pushed the team into the Champions League and former Newcastle keeper Hislop expects it to stay that way amid talk of why they aren’t looking to sign Kane from Spurs.

“As I have said, from day one, the expectation at Newcastle is that they will grow slowly and sensibly,” said Hislop. “They aren’t going to overspend, but they aren’t going to go in for the biggest-name players. They are going to grow as how Eddie Howe continues to lead.

“They see this as a real long-term project. Even though they have the finances to buy just about who they want, in both the short and long term. That’s how they aren’t going to do things. It doesn’t really surprise me that Newcastle aren’t in for Harry Kane or Kylian Mbappe or anywhere else.

“I get it. But that’s what Newcastle aren’t going to do. They aren’t going to financially compete right now with Manchester United etc… They are happy to spend £70 million on Tonali, who is what 24? And see that as a longer-term project and one that they feel they can get a return on.”

Will Kane return to the Champions League?

Tottenham won’t be in any form of Europe next season, which means no midweek games for one of the best strikers in Europe.

That’s a crying shame because, never mind trying to win trophies, he should, at the very least, be competing in the Champions League.

Now, if Spurs manage to keep hold of the 29-year-old, then they have waved the magic wand in a special way, but if they lose him, then it has to be to a team competing right at the top.
