» » » ‘Top class this season’: Ryan Christie thinks one Celtic star with ‘flair’ has been superb

Ryan Christie has now stated that days like the Scottish Cup final are made for players like Celtic winger Jota. He also claims the Portuguese has been ‘top class’ this season.

The 24-year-old recorded his 43rd appearance of the term at Hampden Park on Saturday as Celtic faced Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Jota has been an instrumental piece of boss Ange Postecoglou’s plans this term. He has only left him of out 10 games across all competitions.

Postecoglou has sought to lean heavily on Jota this season with the attacker one of Celtic’s strongest goal threats. Only Kyogo Furuhashi boasted more goals (33) than Jota before the Bhoys met Caley Thistle. While only Matt O’Riley (13) had more assists (12) before kick-off.

Jota has blown Christie away with Celtic this season

Jota’s 14 goals and 12 assists through 42 appearances ahead of the Scottish Cup final blew former Celtic star Christie away. The AFC Bournemouth midfielder, who left Celtic Park for the Cherries in August 2021, also admires how Jota’s goals have backed up his natural flair.

He told BBC Scotland: “Jota has been top class this season. He comes with that Portuguese flair but he backs it up with goals and assists. Days like today are made for players like him.”

The winger has enjoyed two great seasons at Celtic Park

Christie praised Jota before Celtic met Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on Saturday. The showdown in Glasgow brought the curtain down on the former Portugal U21 international’s superb second season playing under Postecoglou, too.

Celtic paid SL Benfica £6.5m to buy Jota in July after triggering a clause in the winger’s loan transfer. The Hoops also agreed to include a significant sell-on clause in the terms of Jota’s switch. Celtic Park chiefs will now be hoping that no club looks to put the clause into effect.

Jota earned Christie’s praise after 42 appearances this season having near-enough matched his goal tally from the previous campaign. The winger convinced Celtic to retain him having struck 13 goals and 14 assists in 40 games whilst on loan from Benfica in the 2021/22 term.
