Porto striker Mehdi Taremi has admitted that he rejected a move to Newcastle United in the January 2022 transfer window.
Newcastle United tried to sign Mehdi Taremi in January 2022 but he rejected the move to St James’ Park.
Taremi has been quoted by Portuguese newspaper Record as saying that he could have joined Newcastle.
However, the Iranian didn’t think that Newcastle was a particularly good move for him at the time.
Newcastle were battling against relegation from the Premier League and were spending after their takeover to try and stay up.
Taremi wasn’t convinced though and didn’t at all imagine that Newcastle would rapidly progress to become a Champions League club.
Taremi didn’t really say that he regretted the decision, as he wanted to play in the Champions League with Porto.
The 30-year-old has now admitted that there is a chance for him to leave, but joining a club like Everton – who have wanted him before too – doesn’t interest him.
“At that time, I didn’t imagine that they would get such a good team that would qualify for the Champions League. They were fighting not to go down,” said Taremi.
“I thought that staying at FC Porto was better. And we had many games in the Champions League, I couldn’t lose that. Now there is an opportunity, but even now, for example, Everton’s offer doesn’t interest me,” he added.

Taremi has been a sensation for Porto.
Snapped up from Rio Ave in 2020, Taremi has now racked up a ridiculous 80 goals and 49 assists in just 147 games.

Taremi showed his quality at the World Cup with two goals against England and he may be one of the most underrated strikers in the game right now.
We can understand why Newcastle wanted Taremi in January 2022 as they chased an experienced striker to help them avoid the drop.
Chris Wood was the man who came in as Newcastle struck a deal that didn’t quite work out as hoped.
It’s hard to imagine Newcastle now going back down the route of signing an experienced centre forward, especially with Eddie Howe needing to juggle both Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.
Taremi’s chance to join Newcastle may well have gone, and his stance on Everton means a Premier League move may not happen at all.
