Sebastian Salazar says he ‘feels sorry’ for West Ham United transfer target Edson Alvarez at Ajax after a transfer deal with Borussia Dortmund seemingly collapsed.
The Mexico international has been tipped to leave Ajax this summer, with the likes of West Ham, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund all hunting for his midfield talents.
But it seems as though a £35 million deal with the German club collapsed, as Salazar questioned ‘how does he go back to Ajax now?’, as he told ESPN.
The Futbol Americas pundit added Edson Alvarez is ‘now being linked with West Ham’ who are set to lose star man and captain Declan Rice this summer.
Whoever David Moyes brings in this summer, he will struggle to replicate what Rice brought to the table, including winning the Europa Conference League in what was his final game for the club.
That’s probably why a few faces might need to be added rather than going for one big name, so with Alvarez’s deal going down the drain with Dortmund, could he be a target for the London club? Salazar discussed his situation.
“I am wondering at this point how he can go back to Ajax,” asked Salazar. “They passed on Chelsea. They passed on Dortmund.
“He has been there five seasons now. What more does he have to prove? What more can he do there? I don’t think that’s a level that’s going to intrigue him much.
“I am worried about this for Edson Alvarez. I don’t think this opportunity is going to come back. An opportunity to be at a club like Dortmund. A team that can compete, not just for their domestic titles, but possibly make deep runs in Europe.
“He’s now been linked to clubs like West Ham, who have big money, for sure, coming out of the Premier League. But that’s a different level of club to even a Dortmund and certainly a different type of club than Chelsea.”
Good luck replacing Rice
These things are always hard to do and you never know what tactics to use. You spend big on a few players, then you risk getting it all wrong at once. Just ask Tottenham after they sold Gareth Bale.
But if you decide to hold some money back, then fans will be left annoyed that enough ambition isn’t being shown.
West Ham don’t exactly have a great track record in the transfer market, but whatever road they go down, they will need serious luck.
