Jamie Redknapp says he feels ‘sorry’ for Sean Longstaff because Sandro Tonali has come in and dethroned him from Newcastle United’s starting XI.
Newcastle have been dropping little gems via the transfer market into their squad and Sandro Tonali was their main capture this summer.
As a result of Tonali coming in, it has meant that Sean Longstaff had to drop out of the XI, and whilst Redknapp sympathised with the player, he thinks such ’big decisions’ are needed to move the club forward, as he told Sky Sports Premier League (12/08/23 at 5:05 pm).
That was proven on Saturday when Tonali produced an outstanding performance to help Newcastle thrash Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park.
Tonali marked his Premier League debut with, not just a win, but also a goal and a game his fans will remember for a long time.
As Redknapp mentioned, the Italy international can do ‘a bit of everything’, as he is now a level above the likes of Longstaff.
“They have got a really good one on their hands here,” said Redknapp. “They have already signed Bruno Guimaraes, who has been a revelation and a cult hero here.
“There is no reason why he can’t as well. In that midfield, they have got a lovely balance.
“I feel a bit sorry for Sean Longstaff. He has had such a good few seasons under Eddie Howe. But when you want to push on, you have to do that sometimes. You have to make big decisions.
“But this guy has got great potential. AC Milan were disappointed to lose him. He can do a bit of everything. Very comfortable on the ball.”
Newcastle ready to prove doubters wrong
Ever since Howe has come into the building, the transfer business they have done is out of this world.
There’s no doubt that they are ahead of schedule, in terms of being in the Champions League, but the way they have started the season they are telling critics that they aren’t going anywhere.
In truth, it probably helps Newcastle’s cause that some think that they will find it tough to balance the Premier League and the Champions League because it will only fire them up even further.
