Darren Bent says Alexis Mac Allister ‘doesn’t want to play’ the defensive midfield role for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

On Sunday, when Liverpool recorded a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, the away side played the most attacking midfield they have put out in a long while.

Both summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai started, with Bent sharing that, out of both teams, it’s the Reds that ‘could do with a defensive midfield player the most’, as he told Premier League Productions (14/08/23 at 2:05 pm).

Now, his name was Fabinho, but unexpectedly, the ever-growing Saudi Arabia Pro League came knocking and he left.

And even though the Brazil international’s form fell off a cliff last season, he has left a gaping hole in the middle of the park.

Mac Allister, who was signed for £35 million (Guardian), has the aggression, ball-winning ability and energy to play that deeper role, but just like at Brighton, he needs that Moises Caicedo beside him – but he is now at Chelsea after snubbing Liverpool.

“That seems to be the fashionable area of the pitch to play now,” said Bent. “When you look at Caicedo. £100 million, it’s crazy.

“When you look at the game (Chelsea v Liverpool). Both teams could do with a defensive midfield player. Maybe more so Liverpool because I don’t think Alexis Mac Allister wants to play there.”

Outside of the Premier League

Premier League clubs dealing with one another is only resulting in one thing, the selling club asking for £100 million for their player.

That’s the name of the game now because your Caicedo, Declan Rice and Enzo Fernandes’s of this world have set that bar.

Unless there is some sort of cap implemented by the powers that be, then those prices will only grow.
