Kevin Campbell has stated ’it might sound crazy’ but Ange Postecoglou would be better off selling Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer.
The former Arsenal player thinks Harry Kane will leave Tottenham, one way or another, whether it’s joining Bayern Munich this summer or for free in 12 months.
But Campbell thinks, it will ‘help’ Ange Postecoglou if Kane left now because it would ease the pressure on the Treble-winning coach from Celtic, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.
In what could be Kane’s final game for the club, he scored four goals during a pre-season friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk.
If it so happens to be his last bow, then he leaves in typical fashion and that’s scoring a crazy amount of goals.
Either way, for Campbell, those in the Spurs boardroom haven’t dealt with this Kane saga well enough, as he highlighted their mistakes.
“I think the timing is all wrong for Spurs,” said Campbell. “They had the opportunity last year to cash in on Harry Kane. Really big money. They didn’t take it. And Harry Kane stayed.
“I think now, with only one year left, I think Spurs can try to play hardball as much as they like. I think Harry Kane is someone who they have to really look at and think ‘either, we get money now’.
“Or, if they get Harry Kane out of the club, and this might sound crazy, it actually helps Ange Postecoglou with what he is trying to do because the pressure isn’t on him as much, as if Harry Kane is there.
“The people upstairs at Spurs are trying to play this game of chance. I think Bayern Munich have played it perfectly. They have put in their final bid. They have left it to Spurs now and do you want to be the guy who kept Harry Kane and then you let him go for free? It makes no sense. I think Spurs have to do the deal.”
Will Kane stay?
With Bayern knocking, a recent report suggested that, if a deal isn’t agreed by Tottenham’s opening Premier League game against Brentford, then the club’s all-time leading goalscorer ‘stays’, as reported by Sky Sports.
Well, a final offer has been put to Daniel Levy, but he is yet to respond. It’s pretty clear, if he says no, then Kane stays and it would be a massive, massive boost to the team.
For years, they have been crying out for an attack-minded coach and a creative talent in James Maddison, to think that could all be wasted by Kane heading for the exit door this summer would hurt and annoy the fans.
Of course, that wouldn’t be aimed at the player, but at those running the ship because, as former left-back Jose Enrique recently claimed, Kane is a ‘very underrated’ player and someone any team would take, including wanting him at his old club in Liverpool, as he posted on his Instagram story in June 2022.
