The Last of Us co-showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed how many seasons the HBO adaption could run for and it sounds like the show will be sticking around for a while.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us quickly became one of the biggest TV shows of 2023 when it arrived on our screens in January and a second season was quickly greenlit which is unsurprisingly going to cover the events of the video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, but what is surprising is that co-showrunner Craig Mazin has said the TV series could run much longer than first expected.

The Last of Us will return for season 2

After season 1 of The Last of Us may have ended in an abrupt fashion, fans can take some solace from the fact that HBO has already renewed the series for a second installment.

The renewal came on January 27, after just two episodes had aired, something that shows incredible confidence from HBO in their new show which is hardly surprising as The Last of Us enjoyed an incredibly successful run, gaining more viewers with almost every episode and earning over 20 Emmy nominations in the process.

In terms of its plot, the second season will cover the events of The Last Of Us Part II, which takes place five years after the first game and sees a 19-year-old Ellie head to Seattle on a revenge mission.

Episode 6 of season 1 already teased several elements from the second game as it featured a host of easter eggs and references that eagle-eyed fans may have spotted.

Craig Mazin says The Last of Us could run much longer than expected

As season 1 of The Last of Us covered the events of the first game in the series in its entirety, many would think it makes sense for the second season to cram in the story of The Last of Us Part II into just one season.

However, that doesn’t take into account the fact that The Last of Us Part II is a much larger game than the first, with a story that is roughly twice the length of the first game, with playthroughs potentially taking up to 30 hours versus 15 hours for the original.

As a result, writer and co-showrunner of The Last of Us series, Craig Mazin, has said that the HBO adaptation could run for as long as four seasons to allow him and Neil Druckmann the opportunity to properly tell the story.

“You never know. It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number,” said Mazin in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more. The best news is the audience wants more.”

This would mean that The Last of Us Part II may require a whopping three seasons to cover fully and with the game telling the story from the perspectives of both Ellie and new character Abby, then that makes plenty of sense.

Rumors of Part III

While the attention of The Last of Us TV show is currently focused on adapting the second video game in the infected-filled series, there could potentially be a further installment to cover if various rumors prove to be true.

In recent months, there have been plenty of rumblings online that a third Last of Us game could well be in the works.

While the game’s creative director and co-showrunner of the TV series, Neil Druckmann, has never openly revealed if a third game is in the works, he did say that “I think there’s more story to tell,” when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter earlier in 2023.

If this proves to be the case, it could mean that Craig Mazin’s current four-season plan could be blown well out of the water if the HBO adaptation was to include a potential third game as well.

Season 1 of The Last of Us is available to stream on Max in the US and NOW in the UK after airing earlier in 2023.
