Alan Shearer says Aaron Ramsdale will be ‘really disappointed’ to be dropped for Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer thinks that the man who replaced him, David Raya, did ‘really well’, as he told Premier League Productions (17/09/23 at 6:40 pm).

It was a big call by Mikel Arteta, and in truth, there will be many who saw it coming, even probably Aaron Ramsdale himself.

In what was Raya’s debut for the Premier League-title-chasing side, he faired very well, with Ian Wright sharing his thoughts on his performance.

But it still raises the question. Who will now start Arsenal’s next two games? Because they are massive.

A Champions League tie against PSV awaits, before that all-important north London derby against Tottenham at the Emirates.

David Raya vs Aaron Ramsdale

“Big moment for him (Raya),” said Shearer. “And a big moment for the manager because it justifies what he is trying to do.

“I am sure that Ramsdale would have been really disappointed to be left out, whether there is going to be the rotation in the Champions League, we will have to wait and see.

“I feel that is the one position you need a regular, if you can, because of the understanding you need to have with your back four.

“This is what he (Raya v Everton) did really well (handling from crosses/set-pieces), without being spectacular, or pulling off great saves. He actually gave his defence a lot of relief, at times, when he came to collect those balls. And, for a defender, that is fantastic to take the pressure off them.”

Emi Martinez, Bernd Leno… and now Aaron Ramsdale?

Euro 2024 is around the corner and Ramsdale has to be playing on a regular basis if he is to, first of all, get a ticket to Germany and then challenge Jordan Pickford for a number one spot.

As of this moment, he probably won’t be too worried. But if the regular starts head Raya’s way, then surely he will question his future.

Emi Martinez did the same, then joined Aston Villa, became Argentina’s number one and proceeded to win the World Cup.

Whilst Bernd Leno didn’t hit the World Cup heights, he was one of the best keepers in the league last season after helping Fulham to a top-half finish after promotion.
