Alan Shearer was unhappy at the inconsistencies with refereeing decisions after Abdoulaye Doucoure wasn’t awarded a penalty during Everton’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The Newcastle United legend used his former club as an example and how Anthony Gordon was awarded a spot-kick against Brentford yesterday, after the opposition goalkeeper, even though he tried to get out of the way, ended up colliding with the winger and taking him out inside the area.

Well, Shearer thinks that a not-too-dissimilar situation happened with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arsenal defender William Saliba when the Everton man charged into the penalty area, before going to ground, as he told Premier League Productions (17/09/23 at 5:30 pm).

And whilst the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer doesn’t think it was a penalty for Everton, he couldn’t understand how one can be given at St James’ Park, but not the other.

When the incident happened, there were some protests from the home crowd and the Everton players.

But, in the end, VAR didn’t look towards the on-field referee to look at his decison via the monitor because they were happy with the initial call.

Abdoulaye Doucoure penalty shout

“I look at the decision Newcastle got yesterday,” said Shearer. “It was deemed as an inevitable collision (between Gordon and Brentford’s goalkeeper inside the penalty area).

“The goalkeeper tried to get out of the way and stopped himself. Very much like the defender (Saliba) did there.

“But there is still contact. The consistency that you are looking for. I don’t want to see that given as a penalty. But one is given and one is not.”

Referees under fire

Another week and more verbals are being thrown towards on-field referees for their performances.

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom didn’t hold back yesterday after his side were beaten in dramatic fashion at Tottenham Hotspur – he even shared the incredible tactical advice he got at half-time by the referee.

Either way, this isn’t going away, as the heat on officials and VAR is only growing by the week.
