Kalvin Phillips has struggled to make an impact at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City since joining from Leeds United, and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are now being urged to make a move for the England international midfielder.
According to talkSPORT pundit Darren Bent, Liverpool should try to sign Kalvin Phillips from Premier League rivals Manchester City.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has said on talkSPORT that if Liverpool have Kalvin Phillips in their midfield, then it would help Alexis Mac Allister play his natural game.
Bent believes that Mac Allister could play in his natural position if Phillips features in the Liverpool midfield.
Mac Allister, who won the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina, moved to Liverpool from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool urged to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City
Football Transfers has reported that City are willing to sell Phillips in the January transfer window.
Phillips made two starts and 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League for City last season.
The £150,000-a-week (Spotrac) England international has played just 45 minutes in the Premier League so far this campaign.
Bent said, as transcribed by RTK: “I think Kalvin Phillips would have been disciplined enough to just sit there and know his role [if Liverpool signed him].
“He’s a good player, he’s not going to make them weaker.
“He could make them stronger because Mac Allister could then move into his natural position, although I really like Curtis Jones, I think he’s doing a great job.”
Manchester City may not sell Kalvin Phillips to Liverpool
In my view, Liverpool could struggle to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.
In recent years, Liverpool have established themselves as the main challengers to City for the Premier League title.
City will know that Phillips would make Liverpool better.
So, why would the Citizens sell the 27-year-old to Liverpool and enhance the Reds’ chances of winning the title?
