Perry Groves thinks that the likes of Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Tottenham playmaker James Maddison need to pull up Harry Kane about dropping too deep for England.

Gareth Southgate’s side recorded a 1-1 draw against Ukraine on Saturday in Poland for their Euro 2024 qualifier.

James Maddison started the game, on the left of a front three, whilst Declan Rice, following his big-money transfer to Arsenal, started in midfield alongside Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson.

But Groves thinks ‘someone has to’ pull Harry Kane up by telling him that Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer dropping deep is ‘encroaching in the areas we want to operate’, as he told talkSPORT

Whilst Kane provided a quite stunning assist, whilst dropping deep, for Kyle Walker to equalise. Others argue that he isn’t in the goalscoring danger zones enough.

If the game is open, then fair enough, but where the problem lies is when England have a lot of possession, with Groves wanting Kane to operate that further forward and he feels his teammates need to have a word to him about his actions.

Harry Kane dropping deep for England

“We mention there about leadership groups,” Groves. “On the pitch, Jude Bellingham is unbelievably mature, by the way. But he isn’t going to pull Harry Kane.

“Even Declan Rice, who is a leader. Someone has to say ‘Harry do us a favour’. Even if you say ‘for the next 10-15 minutes. Please stay up the pitch’.

“If you were Maddison and Bellingham. You would say ‘you are encroaching in the areas we want to operate. Even if you don’t touch the ball for 5-10 minutes. It doesn’t matter’. It stops them playing higher up and it makes the centre-halves think ‘Oh, we have somebody to mark’.

“When you see Harry Kane dropping that deep, then you have Jude Bellingham and James Maddison playing in front of you – even at half-time tell him.”

Harry Kane should continue his current methods

When you can pass the ball like the Bayern Munich star can, then there is no point in telling Kane to stay further forward because it’s a waste of quality.

This is more a case of allowing Kane to do what he wants to do, but the rest of the team having to up their game and Southgate having to be more pro-active and attack-minded in his methods.

That is sometimes the biggest issue, not the England captain dropping into midfield and showcasing his best Kevin de Bruyne impression.
