Ian Wright says Alex Iwobi’s summer transfer from Everton to Fulham shows the level the Merseyside giants have dropped to.

The Arsenal legend thinks that Alex Iwobi was Sean Dyche’s ‘best creative’ player, yet Everton allowed the 27-year-old to leave.

It was pointed out that if Everton, in the past, were to sell a key player, then it’s Wayne Rooney joining the dominant force of Manchester United, not to someone like Fulham, as he told Premier League Productions (17/09/23 at 1:10 pm).

Now, it’s well-documented the financial trouble Everton are in and the sale of Iwobi, who fetched a transfer fee of £22 million (Evening Standard), could be related to that.

This might be the case of the powers that be at Goodison Park needing to balance the books, with Wright sharing his thoughts on the club’s possible takeover.

All in all, with no wins on the board in the Premier League, worry about who could replace Farhad Moshiri and Iwobi leaving, the dark clouds just keep forming above Everton.

Wright not impressed by Iwobi’s transfer

“Everton have sold, for me, arguably, their best creative player in the last couple of seasons in Iwobi,” said Wright. “And they sold him to Fulham.

“This is the level they have dropped to. I am not disrespecting Fulham. We are talking about Rooney to Manchester United, talking about big players, and even Arteta going to Arsenal.

“Players going to big clubs now. Everton are selling certain players, top players, to Fulham. That’s how far they have fallen off.

“It has to be pointed at his door, Moshiri’s door. Simply because he has come in with the money and he doesn’t realise that it’s another level of ownership now. He didn’t have the expertise for it.”

Iwobi is an underrated figure

It’s understandable if the 27-year-old lacked that ruthless nature in front of goal, but it still shouldn’t hide what he did outside of the penalty area.

Iwobi would carry the ball in an effortless manner, be reliable without the ball, ability to play deep from midfield, as well as on the flanks.

He is very different to what Everton have in their midfield now and the currently static players that are in there because they need a player like Iwobi beside them.
