Bruno Fernandes has stated that Manchester United ‘wanted’ Arsenal to have ‘spells’ on the ball, so they could use it to counter-attack their opponents.
The Manchester United captain felt that happened and the Premier League showdown at the Emirates was ‘well-balanced’.
In the end, it was Mikel Arteta’s side celebrating because Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus scored stoppage-time goals to help Arsenal to a 3-1 win, with Bruno Fernandes adding ‘It’s tough to lose the game the way we lose’, as he told Premier League Productions (03/09/23 at 7:05 pm).
Erik ten Hag will be frustrated with his players because, for the second season running, they opened the scoring at the Emirates through Marcus Rashford, but they left empty-handed – both Ian Wright and Micheal Owen were in agreement about Kai Havertz ‘mistake’.
Just like the days of Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, this fixture had the blood and thunder nature to it, with a dominant midfielder coming out on top.
This is what Fernandes made of it all, as he admitted that the Gunners caused his team ‘problems’.
“It’s always tough to lose the game the way we lose,” said Fernandes. “I see a team fighting with a great spirit.
“We concede a late goal (Jesus) after trying to get the draw and then you concede another goal. Losing by one or two doesn’t make a difference. You have to make the result.
“But they have a good team. They play well. Also, they create a lot of problems to us. It’s good if the Garnacho goal isn’t offside. It could have come to our side. I think it was a good game for both teams, but they got the points, in the end.
“I felt the game was really balanced. They had some spells on the ball. But we wanted them to have the spells on the ball and we knew we could create the dangers on the counter because we have players with great quality when going in-behind.”
Arsenal win dramatic showdown
From Bukayo Saka’s possible red card challenge on Fernandes in the first half, to the awarding of the ‘dubious’ corner that led to Rice’s winner, it was all going off, from start to finish.
Whilst Manchester United fans will feel they were hard done by, at the end of the day, it’s another defeat away from home against a top side.
This is something Erik ten Hag has to get out of his team’s system, or else, they won’t progress.
