Michael Owen thinks the Premier League title race is ‘open’ for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa after Arsenal beat Manchester City.

That’s back-to-back league defeats for the Premier League champions, who head into the international break third in the table, with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham leading the way.

Spurs are ahead of second-placed Arsenal on goals scored, whilst Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are fourth followed by Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and free-scoring Brighton.

In years gone by, Manchester City, who won the Treble last season, have dominated the domestic scene. They are aiming to win a historic fourth Premier League title in a row.

But former England striker Michael Owen thinks Arsenal’s win at the weekend has given ‘everybody a bit of a lift’ that it might not be as one-sided, as he told Premier League Productions (08/10/23 at 6:25 pm).

It’s still early days to have a proper opinion on the title race, but if it’s still like this in February, then fans from across the world will be in for a ride.

Premier League title race

“Spurs have been one of the stories of the season, so far,” said Owen. “I love the way they play.

“It has given everybody, Liverpool, Spurs, Aston Villa are up there now as well, it has given everybody a little bit of lift to say ‘okay, this could be a little open now’. Newcastle United are another team.

“So, it’s open. The Premier League is open after results like that. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint, as we know. Manchester City always get better and better throughout the season. But, at the moment, it’s looking really open.”

Manchester City will be there

There has been an overreaction to Man City’s recent defeats, it wasn’t so long ago when they were winning every game.

One thing is for sure, during the final few months of the season, they will be near the top or sitting on top of the tree.

It’s just a case of if Arsenal, who slipped up last season, can get over the line this time around and Liverpool getting back to their old self.

Then there is the rejuvenated Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, as well as the underrated Unai Emery at Villa and the ever-progressing Newcastle United.
