House of the Dragon season 2 will feature the death of a key Targaryen prince if the rumored title of episode 1 proves to be true.

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2* — Filming on the second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has reportedly wrapped, barring the need for reshoots, and some fresh details have emerged about the coming episodes and how the title of one of them foreshadows a crucial death.

Rumored episode title hints at death of Targaryen prince in House of the Dragon season 2

A recent report from the site Redanian Intelligence suggests that the title of the first episode of House of the Dragon season 2 will be called ‘A Son for a Son.’

The rumored title is taken directly from a letter that Daemon sends to Rhaenyra in the books after receiving news of the death of her son, Lucerys Velaryon, who was killed in the final episode of season 1.

Daemon’s letter reads: “An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys will be avenged.”

What follows in the original book, Fire & Blood, is a deadly revenge plot and the assassination of Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen, one of King Aegon II’s sons, which then sparks an all-out civil war between the Targaryens that becomes known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Promises the introduction of two key characters

The imminent assassination plot that is likely to dominate the early episodes of season 2 promises to introduce two key characters from the book who have so far been absent from the HBO series.

They are Blood and Cheese, not their real names, who are a pair of assassins Daemon hires to carry out the murderous deed and kill King Aegon II’s six-year-old firstborn son.

Blood is a butcher and was once a sergeant in the City Watch of King’s Landing who would have served under Daemon in his time as the leader of the Gold Cloaks.

Cheese, meanwhile, was a ratcatcher who possessed an innate knowledge of the secret tunnels beneath the Red Keep, making them the perfect duo to sneak into the royal palace undetected.

Taking on the roles of Blood and Cheese respectively will be actors Sam C. Wilson (Hanna, Dodger) and Mark Stobbart (Line of Duty, 55 Degrees North).

Changes from the book

House of the Dragon has never been afraid of tweaking the events from the book, which were written in the style of potentially inaccurate historical accounts rather than that of a novel.

As such, the HBO series is treating itself as the definitive account of the tale.

To that end, there will be some changes to the assassination from what book fans may be familiar with.

That’s chiefly due to the fact that Daemon is rumored to be present in King’s Landing on the night of the assassination according to Redanian Intelligence.

This differs from the book’s historical account which claimed that Daemon secretly coordinated the assassination from his base in Harrenhal, while this version will give him a much more hands-on approach, which would certainly be in keeping with the character as he’s been portrayed in the series.

How exactly the assassination of Prince Jaehaerys will take place in House of the Dragon remains to be seen.

House of the Dragon is expected to return to HBO in the US and Sky/Now in the UK in 2024.
