Freddie Potts has been performing ‘brilliantly’ since leaving Premier League outfit West Ham United for a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers.

At least, that is the assessment of Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield.

Bloomfield knows a thing or two about thriving as a midfielder in the hustle and bustle of the lower leagues. He made nearly 500 league appearances for The Chairboys as a player after all. And he has been suitably impressed by the way Freddie Potts – who only celebrated his 20th birthday in September – has adapted to life during his first ever loan spell away from West Ham United.

West Ham’s Freddie Potts shining on loan

Forming an impressive and improving partnership with former Sunderland man Josh Scowen, Potts has started 13 of Wycombe’s 16 League One fixtures, even scoring his first senior goal against Charlton Athletic.

“I think Fred has taken to league football brilliantly,” Bloomfield tells the Bucks Free Press

“I can’t ask for anymore in terms of his output. Despite being so young, he is so mature for his age. And one thing I love about him is that he is always wanting to improve.

“There is nothing about him which gets carried away. He lives by his means and he’s a great lad who just wants to have a good career in football.

“We want to help him and we’re happy to have him.”

Potts, who joined West Ham at the age of six, made two appearances during the club’s triumphant Europa Conference League campaign last season, manager David Moyes full of praise for a ‘terrific young man’ ready for the ‘next stage of his development’ (KeepUp).

Potts, with his performances at Wycombe, is certainly looking like a man who has outgrown the sterilised world of academy football.

‘Delighted to have him’

“We realised that we needed Premier League loans, and Fred is someone we have known about for a long time,” Bloomfield adds.

“He went to Australia with West Ham in the summer (on the pre-season tour). And there is always that risk when things take a bit too long. But we got in through a gamble, and we’re delighted to have him.”
