Darren Bent says it’s ‘absolutely embarrassing’ that West Ham United’s in-form star James Ward-Prowse hasn’t been selected by England.
Gareth Southgate opted to snub West Ham’s summer signing once more, despite his performances in the Premier League and in Europe.
Former Premier League striker Darren Bent thinks it’s ‘embarrassing’ because James Ward-Prowse should be in the squad, as he told talkSPORT.
Sometimes fans, and even the player himself, can acknowledge not being selected if the depth in quality in front of you is of a high standard and deep.
But that’s not the case here because Kalvin Phillips is being selected despite playing around 700 minutes for Manchester City since his transfer in 2022.
The former Leeds United man is watching a youngster in Rico Lewis playing in his number six spot whilst Rodri is suspended, as well as Bernardo Silva and John Stones, yet he gets to play for his country.
James Ward-Prowse and England
“James Ward-Prowse has been fantastic,” said Bent. “£30 million from Southampton. Two goals and three assists in the Premier League. West Ham are flying. He has been phenomenal.
“What I like about Ward-Prowse is that there is no ego there. He turns up and does it at a high level.
“Embarrassing. Absolutely embarrassing that he’s not in the England squad.”
West Ham benefit from Ward-Prowse snub
Yes, everyone associated with the Hammers will want their £30 million summer capture from Southampton (BBC Sport) to be picked by England.
But, at the end of the day, during what is going to be another hectic season for David Moyes’ side, one of their important players is getting a rest.
Avoids the risk of injury and it means that the player remains fresh for the crunch moments of the season.
