Chris Waddle says Mikel Arteta was fuming with Bukayo Saka and Ben White during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.
During and after the game, it seems as though Mikel Arteta wasn’t a happy man, with the call to allow Newcastle United’s goal in the second half to stand leaving the Arsenal boss seething.
Was the ball over the line? Did Joelinton foul Gabriel? There were a lot of talking points and it saw Ian Wright arguing with Dermot Gallagher on the matter.
But it seems as though Mikel Arteta was frustrated with how his team was playing early on in the game, including his right-sided duo, Bukayo Saka and Ben White, as Chris Waddle told BBC Sport.
Bukayo Saka has usually been outstanding on that right channel, but he was kept quiet by Dan Burn yesterday, whilst Ben White was subbed after 73 minutes.
But it seems as though Mikel Arteta was fuming at his two on the right channel for ‘not closing down quickly enough’, according to England legend Chris Waddle.
Bukayo Saka and Ben White
“Mikel Arteta is going mad on the touchline with Bukayo Saka and Ben White about them not closing down quickly enough,” said Waddle.
Arsenal need to move on
There is nothing Arsenal can do about that VAR call now, whether the officials were correct or not.
Before a ball was kicked this season, if you said Arsenal were going to suffer their first defeat after 11 matches, and that at a place like St James’ Park, then the fans would have accepted it.
Last season, those in north London were being chased by Manchester City and they, in the end, hunted them down and made them fall towards the end.
Perhaps Arsenal chasing this time around will help their cause because it takes the pressure off them.
