Eidur Gudjohnsen and Steve McManaman were critical of Reece James after he was sent off during Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle United.

It never rains but pours for Chelsea, or so that seems with their performances, as they illustrated against an injury-hit Newcastle side on Saturday – Dean Saunders was critical of Mauricio Pochettino for his comments after the match.

Injury has caused Reece James many problems over the years, so he didn’t help himself by picking up two needless yellows yesterday and he is now set to be on the sidelines again.

Former striker Eidur Gudjohnsen thinks the Chelsea captain ‘let the team down’, whilst former Real Madrid star Steve McManman added that it was ‘really poor’ from the right-back, as he told Premier League Productions (25/11/23 at 5:10 pm).

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were already having a bad day, but you know it’s really bad when your most reliable player, Thiago Silva, gifts the opposition a goal.

But that was just one of many problems that Chelsea endured themselves, with Eidur Gudjohnsen and Steve McManaman critical of the man with the armband.

Reece James’ red card for Chelsea

“When you thought they would have an uphill battle 3-1 down, on a yellow card, your captain, he did let them down a little bit I thought,” said Gudjohnsen.

McManaman added: “When you are on a yellow card, you just don’t touch. They are 3-1 down when this happens. The game is almost gone. That effectively ended the game.

“It’s really poor. He has been injured and he has just come back. He is the skipper and he does that. When they have a bad day, they have a really bad day.”

Another backwards step for Chelsea

The performances against Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as the win at Tottenham, started to provide the Chelsea fans with hope.

The feeling was that the team was starting to make progress and showcase their worth under their new manager.

But this seems like a backwards step for the team, who for the second game running, have conceded four goals.

It’s all good doing it against the Treble winners and securing a point, but it looks far worse when it happens in defeat.
