Tottenham Hotspur are completely unwilling to let Giovani Lo Celso leave for a move to Barcelona in the January transfer window.
Barcelona will seemingly have to forget about their hopes of signing Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham Hotspur in January.
That is according to the London Evening Standard, who claim that Tottenham will block Barcelona’s interest in Lo Celso.
Barcelona were rocked on Sunday night as they saw Gavi pick up a major knee injury whilst in action for Spain.
Gavi will now miss the rest of the season and his injury leaves Barca with a major hole to fill in midfield.
Tottenham ready to block Barcelona move for Giovani Lo Celso
One of the names in the mix for Barcelona is Giovani Lo Celso.
Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported on Monday that Barcelona would like to sign Lo Celso on loan for the second half of the season.
Xavi wanted Lo Celso over the summer and his lack of playing time has given Barcelona encouragement.
However, reports from the London Evening Standard suggest that Tottenham have no interest in letting the Argentinian go.
It’s suggested that Lo Celso could now play a bigger role for Tottenham with James Maddison currently out injured.
Loaning Lo Celso out just doesn’t add up for Tottenham after 18 months away on loan at Villarreal, with only a pure cash sale suiting Spurs if any exit is to take place.
Lo Celso stance is great news for Celtic
Tottenham have relied heavily on Maddison’s creativity this season, so his injury is a major blow.
Maddison isn’t expected back until January and Lo Celso may now need to step up as Tottenham’s creative hub in midfield.
It sounds like Lo Celso staying means Tottenham won’t be trying to sign another playmaker in January, and that will be a source of delight for Celtic.
TEAMtalk reported earlier this month that Ange Postecoglou is interested in Celtic playmaker Matt O’Riley.
The pair worked together in Glasgow and Postecoglou seemingly fancies a reunion in North London.
O’Riley would certainly bring creativity to the Tottenham midfield and we can absolutely understand why Postecoglou would see him as competition for Maddison.
Yet unless Lo Celso moves on, it’s hard to imagine Tottenham going in for another playmaker in January.
That means O’Riley is even more likely to stay at Celtic, which is great for Brendan Rodgers and co after a superb start to the season.
