» » » 12 highest-rated Christmas movies to watch on Disney+ right now

With so many festive films to choose from, we’ve picked out 12 of the best Christmas movies on Disney+ according to their rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and surprisingly, several all-time family favorites have some unexpectedly low scores.

Jump to…

12. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

RT score: 60%

A remake of the 1947 classic, 1994’s Miracle on 34th Street stars Mara Wilson as six-year-old Susan Walker whose non-existent belief in Santa Claus is reignited when she meets a department store Father Christmas named Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough) who claims to be the genuine article.

11. The Preacher’s Wife

RT score: 62%

Starring Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston, The Preacher’s Wife is a remake of another 1947 classic, this time The Bishop’s Wife. The film follows a reverend who begins to doubt his ability to make a difference until a charming and charismatic angel named Dudley is sent to help. However, Dudley soon becomes the source of the problem as he falls in love with the preacher’s wife.

10. Home Alone

RT score: 65%

A bona fide festive favorite, Home Alone tells the story of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) as he defends his house from burglars, the Wet Bandits, after his family forgets to take him on a Christmas vacation. Despite being so beloved, Home Alone’s Rotten Tomatoes score is a curiously low 65%.

9. The Santa Clause

RT score: 73%

Starring Tim Allen, The Santa Clause follows divorced dad Scott Calvin as he and his son discover that the real Santa Claus has fallen off their roof and died. When Scott dons the famous red coat and takes the reigns of the magical sleigh, he inadvertently becomes Santa himself.

The movie went on to spawn a trilogy of films while Scott Calvin’s story is still continuing in the ongoing Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses.

8. The Muppet Christmas Carol

RT score: 77%

The Muppet Christmas Carol is undoubtedly the best Muppet movie ever made and arguably among the best adaptations of Charles Dickens’ legendary tale. It blends the wackiness of Jim Henson’s loveable puppets with a delightfully devilish performance from the superb Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge.

7. While You Were Sleeping

RT score: 81%

Starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman, While You Were Sleeping may not seem like a traditional Christmas movie but as its plot takes place during the festive season, it very much counts. The movie follows Lucy, a lonely subway worker, who becomes infatuated with a handsome stranger she’s seen from afar, until one day she saves his life, dramatically altering the course of her own fate.

6. Edward Scissorhands

RT score: 89%

Directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Edward Scissorhands tells the story of a young man who was created by an inventor to have long metal blades instead of fingers. When his creator dies, Edward is taken in by the caring Kim (Winona Ryder) and her family. The film earns its festive status thanks to its final act which takes place at Christmas and sees Edward carving ice sculptures.

5. Frozen

RT score: 90%

Disney’s Frozen is arguably the least Christmassy movie on this list as it has no connection to the festive season at all. However, thanks to the movie’s wintry setting and family-themed adventure of sisters Elsa and Anna, it’s become a firm favorite to watch over the holidays.

4. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

RT score: 94%

It wouldn’t be Disney+ without an entry from Marvel. 2022’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sees Mantis and Drax team up to get a dejected Peter Quill the best Christmas present ever, his favorite Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon.

3. Die Hard

RT score: 94%

The debate about Die Hard being a Christmas movie has raged ever since it was released in 1988. Bruce Willis stars as John McClane who is forced to spring into bare-footed action as he’s caught in the middle of a terrorist plot on Christmas Eve.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

RT score: 95%

The beloved 1993 animated film takes place in a magical world where each seasonal holiday has its own special land. Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town but after years of the same old tricks and treats, he discovers the festive wonders of Christmas Town and tries to bring the joyful holiday back to his own land, leading to disastrous consequences.

1. Mircale on 34th Street (1947)

RT score: 96%

We began this list with the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street so it seems fitting that the highest-rated Christmas movie available on Disney+ is the 1947 original. Starring Edmund Gwenn, the film follows Kris Kringle, a seemingly ordinary man who takes on the job of Santa at Macy’s department store. However, Kris has his sanity questioned after claiming to be the real Santa Claus.
