» » » ‘It’s ridiculous’: Ian Wright annoyed about what he’s hearing about Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool put on quite a show against Fulham on Sunday at Anfield as they maintained their 100% start to life on home soil this season.

The Liverpool fans may have enjoyed it, but in truth, being involved in a 4-3 thriller isn’t what Jurgen Klopp probably ordered because there were a number of defensive issues in there.

But one man who has stepped up for the team in recent weeks has been Trent Alexander-Arnold, who after his brilliant equalising goal against Manchester City last week, was at it again with a brace against Fulham.

Or was it a brace? That free-kick goal, officially, went down as a Bernd Leno own goal, but Ian Wright wasn’t having any of it, as he told Premier League Productions (04/12/23 at 2:30 pm).

When the Arsenal legend was told that Trent Alexander-Arnold wasn’t going to be given the goal, he labelled it ‘ridiculous’, and rightly so.

The right-back-turned-midfielder did ever so well to get the ball above the wall, with such venom and speed, only to be told that it’s an own goal because of a difference in inches.

As you can imagine, with his goalscoring hat on, Ian Wright wasn’t best pleased with what he was hearing.

“How can they not give that first one to Trent, by saying that’s an own goal?” questioned Wright.

“Look at that?! It’s ridiculous not giving him that goal.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold finding his attacking form for Liverpool

A lot tend to focus on the defensive side of Alexander-Arnold’s game, when in truth, the spotlight should be on what he does going forward.

There aren’t many players better than him going forward, not just in the Premier League, but in Europe.

Gareth Southgate has used him in the middle of the park for England, whilst Klopp is playing him in a hybrid role at Anfield.

Either way, he is looking razor sharp as Liverpool push towards making a challenge for the Premier League title this season, with a trip to bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, who have reappointed Chris Wilder as manager after sacking Paul Heckingbottom, up next on Wednesday night.
