Craig Burley says not even struggling Newcastle United would sign Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur if they had a choice.

With the January transfer window open, it seems as though Eric Dier could be headed for the exit door because he simply doesn’t feature in Ange Postecoglou’s long-term plans.

Sources have told HITC Football that the 29-year-old has held talks with Bayern Munich, with his current deal at Tottenham set to expire at the end of the season.

The suggestions that Eric Dier could be Munich-bound have surprised some because he is struggling to get a game at Spurs.

But Craig Burley thinks, not even a team like Newcastle would sign him, who before their FA Cup win over bitter rivals Sunderland, were going through a period to forget, as he told ESPN

The thing here is that in the world of crazy and inflated transfer fees, not only would you pay such a small fee for the player if you signed him this month, but you could get him for nothing in the summer.

If you then add in his experience, England caps and the fact that the £85k-a-week star has played in the Champions League, then it does make things appealing, but not for Burley.

“Newcastle don’t take Dier,” said Burley. “Anybody who is struggling, at the minute, just doesn’t take him.”

Radu Dragusin incoming

When everyone is fit Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are Spurs’ two standout centre-backs, with Emerson Royal and Ben Davies playing the back-up roles.

It’s pretty clear faces needed to be added and that could come in the form of Radu Dragusin of Genoa.

Spurs have dipped into the Italian market before and it has done them the world of good, so it’s no reason why this one, if it gets over the line, won’t go down the same road.

Yes, Postecoglou has had bonafide centre-backs to choose from, but he has decided against using them, so that much-needed and proper centre-back cover is seriously needed this month.
