Craig Burley has compared Eric Dier’s possible transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich to Kai Havertz joining Arsenal in the summer.

When the German international left Chelsea for Arsenal, it raised a lot of eyebrows because he wasn’t exactly having the best of times at Stamford Bridge, yet he was snapped up by the second-best team in the Premier League.

Whilst that transfer in London took people aback, it seemed as though Eric Dier’s next possible move could do the same.

Sources have told HITC Football that the out-of-favour Tottenham defender is in talks with Bayern Munich about a possible move.

Craig Burley says even if the 29-year-old moved to the Bundesliga giants for a ‘fiver’, it would still be ‘baffling’, as he told ESPN

Eric Dier has six months left on his Spurs contract, it’s pretty clear that he isn’t going to be a part of Ange Postecoglou’s long-term plans.

If he wished, he could sign a pre-contract agreement and then join them in the summer on a free.

But there seems to be something in the water currently that the versatile defender could be heading for the exit door this month.

Eric Dier to Bayern Munich

“It’s a fall-off-the-chair moment, isn’t it,” said Burley. “It’s quite telling when you have the defensive problems that he (Postecoglou) has and he is more than happy to let Eric Dier go.

“I think it has been quite clear from the off that he doesn’t fancy him. I think one of his main issues is his lack of mobility. We have one of the titans of Europe, who have just made a club record signing at the start of the season in Harry Kane, fighting tooth and nail with Bayer Leverkusen, who are unbeaten in the Bundesliga, and then we move on to Champions League.

“Then you are possibly bringing in a guy who hasn’t played well for at least two or three years, mistake-ridden, slow, cumbersome and that’s going to take Bayern to the next level?

“If Eric Dier gets a move to Bayern Munich, after the period he has had, then there is a chance for the rest of us. – this is left field. This is Kai Havertz to Arsenal for £70 million. This is where the hell is he going to fit in. And how is this going to work?

“Unless somebody throws us a curve ball hear, I just don’t get it. It’s still baffling at a fiver.”

Both players were part of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino’s stewardship.

Despite the quality of the Spurs team, no matter how hard they pushed, they just couldn’t get over that trophy line.

But it would be some story for Dier, if the £85k-a-week star joins Bayern and wins that much-needed trophy alongside Harry Kane in Germany.
