It has been a pretty productive January transfer window for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.
Led by Johan Lange in the boardroom, Spurs have been active in both incomings and outgoings this month, with their latest deal involving Ivan Perisic.
The 34-year-old has only played 169 minutes of football for Tottenham this season because of a cruciate ligament tear he suffered back in August.
But that hasn’t stopped him from making a return to his boyhood club Hajduk Split on a loan deal until the end of the season, with the Croatia star set to earn 1 euro per month until the end of the campaign.
When ex-Championship manager Gary Rowett was told of that, he labelled it ‘incredible’ and how it is such a ‘nice story to hear’, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports.
Ivan Perisic was signed by Antonio Conte on a free transfer and his current deal was due to expire in the summer.
Whilst the versatile star isn’t going to return to the pitch anytime soon, there is every chance he will play some football this term, so he has made his return to Hajduk Split early.
Ivan Perisic leaves Tottenham for Hajduk Split
“That’s incredible isn’t it,” said Rowett. “That’s a nice story to hear. Someone that wants to go back to a club that means a lot to him.
“That’s what it’s all about. If Perisic can make a difference to them, for that sort of value, then what a great gesture.”
Trimming the Spurs squad
All of this just starts the ironing process for Postecglou and allows him to bring in players elsewhere as wages free up.
Perisic was a regular for Spurs at left-back last season and faired very well for the team.
But a certain thriving youngster in Destiny Udogie has now made that position his own, as the Italian star has probably been one of the best players this season.
Come the summer, Tottenham need to sort out their left-back area because they have too many players in that role.
Perisic will be off the books, Ryan Sessegnon has been injury-prone, Ben Davies is another option, Udogie is now the main man, whilst Sergio Regulion is now in his second loan spell of the season.
