» » » ’No wonder he gets frustrated’: Shearer says Man United players make 26-year-old's job 'more difficult'

Manchester United fans and Erik ten Hag would have been breathing a sigh of relief when Casemiro did his best Mark Robins impersonation at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

No-one needed this win more than the Manchester United manager and it now keeps him in the hunt to win the FA Cup.

But whilst Erik ten Hag is breathing easy, you feel Marcus Rashford is still frustrated and it’s something Alan Shearer understands.

The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer was on commentary duty for Manchester United’s win at the City Ground and he admitted to ‘having a go’ at the player in the first-half, as he told BBC One.

But he feels that his own teammates, because of the ’slow’ nature of their play, make Marcus Rashford’s job ‘much more difficult’ than it should be.

Look, the player himself can’t complain because frustrated fans have the right to question his workrate and inability to create chances himself.

But, as the 26-year-old proved last season, if you feed him, and quickly enough, then he will punish you and score bundles of goals.

Marcus Rashford’s frustration

“I am getting more frustrated with the lack of forward play when Man United get into positions,” said Shearer.

“You have got the chance to hit them on the break and it’s slow, slow, slow. The movement, there is no intensity in their play.

“I had a go at Marcus in the first half, but when you have got players who aren’t prepared to move it or stretch teams, it doesn’t half make his job that much more difficult. No wonder he gets frustrated, at times. I know I would in that position.”

Pressure on Marcus Rashford

The issue with Rashford is that he has been here before and had a season off, under a previous manager and completely different tactics, so this isn’t just a ten Hag issue.

After 25 Premier League games this term, he only has five goals to his name, and aside from scoring in three games in a row, it has been another relatively quiet season for him in front of goal.

With Euro 2024 around the corner, many are rightfully questioning if he deserves that golden ticket to Germany because his form says otherwise.

Unless Rashford goes on a goalscoring madness, from now until the end of the season, and he still has a chance to do so, more than likely he will go into the summer in poor form and not deserving of playing in the European Championships.
