Ange Postecoglou is full of praise for Brennan Johnson’s progress at Tottenham Hotspur with the summer signing from Nottingham Forest scoring a last-gasp Premier League winner against Brighton and Hove Albion last time out.

The story of Brennan Johnson’s Spurs career, since that £47 million move from the City Ground, has followed a rather consistent narrative.

The Welsh international getting himself into excellent positions in the final third and then squandering his chance, hitting goalkeepers, goal-posts and, pretty regularly, the crowd behind the goal rather than the back of the net itself.

His stoppage time winner at home to Brighton last Saturday, then, felt like a big moment. Bot only for Johnson but for the man in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout too, Postecoglou training the jet-heeled 22-year-old to make the sort of darting penalty-area runs that, say, Liel Abada made his trademark north of the border at Celtic.

“Yeah, really good,” Postecoglou said, discussing Johnson’s progress with Football London.

“Again, (first-team coach) Chris Davies has done a lot of work with the front-half guys, with Maso (Ryan Mason). And a lot of our work is around that; getting our wingers or our players into goalscoring positions.

“It’s the way I’ve set my teams up for a very long time. And (Johnson) is one that has understood that. It’s different from what he has done (before) and it’s not easy. Trying to get that timing right and when you arrive, having a good technique… He has a great technique under pressure.

“He showed that last week and showed it the last couple of times,” the former Hoops boss adds, Johnson converting Heung-Min Son’s 95th minute assist at the far post.

“It becomes really difficult to stop when you get that synergy between our attacking players. So having a goal last week of winger to winger is good, because they get rewarded for things we speak about and understand how important it is.

“And hopefully that keeps them looking for more growth.”

A big step forward

With ten in all competitions and eight in the top-flight, Johnson was a pretty reliable source of goals for Nottingham Forest in 2022/23. The movement and the finish he applied against Brighton, however, is one that – if perfected – can take Johnson’s numbers to a whole new level. See Abada, scorer of 28 goals from the wing during two years under Postecoglou at Celtic.

Tottenham face Wolves on Saturday at 3pm.
