In years gone by, Tottenham Hotspur were always guaranteed that one of their players was heading for England duty – Harry Kane.
The England captain has been a shoo-in for nearly a decade now, but with him out of the door and in the colours of Bayern Munich, it’s not so certain now.
Yes, the majority of the public would pick James Maddison to go to Euro 2024, but it needs to be remembered that this is Gareth Southgate in charge.
But ahead of Euro 2024, could there be a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad?
Months after leaving Tottenham, Michael Dawson put forward the name of Eric Dier, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (23/03/24 at 2:15 pm).
It was acknowledged that the 30-year-old ‘couldn’t get a game for Spurs’ after Ange Postecoglou played fullbacks in his position when Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were unavailable.
But he is starting to turn this around in Germany and for Bayern Munich, which has even impressed Tim Sherwood.
Eric Dier wasn’t selected in England’s latest squad – the final one before Euro 2024 – but Michael Dawson was still keen to mention his name.

“I think another player no one has touched upon here (for England’s defence),” said Dawson.
“And you will say ‘what, he couldn’t get a game at Spurs?!’. He has gone to Bayern Munich, if they get even further in the Champions League and he starts doing well. He was well in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts for a long period and lacked form. He is now playing at Bayern Munich.
“So, it depends on the next manager, if it’s a possibility that particular thing could happen. It’s all about timing (when the squad is announced for Euro 2024). Injuries. Form. Who knows what will happen in the next two months and where Bayern Munich might be?!”

Once again, the Three Lions will head to Germany as one of the favourites to win the whole competition.
After losing narrowly on penalties at Euro 2020, you feel, at the very least, England have to reach the finals here.
Understandably, they are one of the favourites, but other nations need to be respected, including the hosts, France, Portugal, Spain and even the dark horses, Switzerland.
All in all, Spurs fans will be hoping Maddison gets picked, but with so much talent to pick from, you just know there will be a surprise exclusion from the final 23.
