» » » ‘Playing to the gallery’: Simon Jordan unimpressed by what he's hearing from Man United's Sir Jim Ratcliffe

You imagine these next few months could be huge for everyone associated with Manchester United.

From the future of the manager Erik ten Hag to what type of changes Sir Jim Ratcliffe is going to make at the club.

One of the areas that has seriously let Manchester United down over the years has been the recruitment.

Overspending and big-money signings just collapsing into oblivion, it has all been very problematic for the club.

But Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent transfer comments about Manchester United haven’t gone down well with Simon Jordan.

The new Manchester United co-owner claimed that rather than sign players like Kylian Mbappe, he would prefer if the club signs ‘the next Mbappe’.

But Simon Jordan stated that is ‘the statement of the bleedin’ obvious’ and he thinks the new man in the Old Trafford boardroom is just ‘playing to the gallery’, as he told talkSPORT (21/03/24 at 11:55 am).

At the end of the day, these new faces at Manchester United, those who have already arrived and those who will come in, can do all the talking as much as they want.

All that will matter are the results on the field of play and whether the team can lift those major trophies again.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s transfer claim

“Wouldn’t we all,” responded Jordan. “I mean that has got to be the statement of the bleedin’ obvious.

“Any big football club that has significant opportunities and wealth, they would very much like to sign the next Mbappe and not pay for the current one.

“I would have thought, with real respect to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his significantly greater business acumen than mine, that’s just playing to the gallery. That still involved potential and potential still costs because, as you would recall, Borussia Dortmund paid £30 million for Jude Bellingham, so that doesn’t come from nothing, so you are just going to be in the terrority of spending decent money.”

Manchester United’s summer transfer window

Even if Man United go down the road of buying young players or prospects, it’s going to cost serious dough – Sources have told HITC Football that there is interest in Everton’s Jarrod Branthwaite.

What the proven player in the past used to cost is now in the same bracket as the player with just potential, but no track record.

Added to that, Man United also find that opposition teams tend to force Man United to pay inflated prices for their players.

That’s probably going to happen again in the summer and that’s where the likes of Ratcliffe are going to be tested.
