One of the reasons why Tottenham Hotspur are flourishing under head coach Ange Postecoglou this season is that they have a number of young and promising players.
I think that Tottenham Hotspur have a good balance between experienced players and youngsters.
True, Spurs do not have the squad to compete with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title, but the North London club could certainly end up fourth and they probably will.
While there are established stars such as James Maddison, Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min in the current Tottenham Hotspur squad, there are also young players such as Radu Dragusin, Destiny Udogie, Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr.
Another young player in the current Tottenham squad who is starring at the moment is Micky van de Ven.
The 22-year-old joined Tottenham from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 and hit the ground running at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Van de Ven has had injury problems this season, but when fit and available, he is one of the first names on the Tottenham teamsheet and lines up alongside Romero at the heart of the Tottenham defence.
The young centre-back has made 22 appearances for Spurs this season. He has scored two goals in those games. Van de Ven’s pace has been widely appreciated.
Ange Postecoglou gives his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven
Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has been hugely impressed with Van de Ven and has noted that he always wants to improve.
Postecoglou told TNT Sports about Van de Ven: “He’s been outstanding. I’m reluctant to say how good he can be because I don’t know and I would hate to put a limit on it.
“When you look at him and his background, he’s had one year in the Bundesliga, again not at a massive club [Wolfsburg], and he’s come to the Premier League. His growth through this year has just been outstanding for us.
“People talk about his speed and his ability to defend in one-on-one situations but everything about him is improving – his passing, his ball carrying, his physicality, and he’s great to work with. He wants to improve every day.”
Liverpool wanted to sign Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven had the chance to join Liverpool in the summer of 2023, but the defender chose Tottenham Hotspur instead.
TEAMtalk reported in November 2023 that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk had personally approached Van de Ven over a potential move to Anfield. Both are Dutch.
The young defender, though, decided to move to Tottenham because he thought that he would stand a better chance of playing regular first-team football.
