A game to forget for Tottenham Hotspur and a nightmare match for Micky van de Ven.

Spurs fans must really hate travelling to St James’ Park because, for the second season running, they have been humiliated by Newcastle United.

Last season, Eddie Howe’s side managed to put six goals past the London club, but this time around they only managed the four goals.

Once again, in the space of a few minutes, the game was taken away from Tottenham, with several players having moments to forget.

Micky Van de Ven has been the one hitting the headlines because he has become a meme for how he was sat down by Alexander Isak and then Anthony Gordon.

But forget about the Dutchman, two other players were of concern to Alan Shearer – Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro.

Both were at fault for the opening two goals, even if their teammate hit the headlines.

Shearer stated that Porro, who had to go off early in the second half because of injury, ‘didn’t have a clue’ where Isak was for the first goal, as he told Premier League Productions (13/04/24 at 2:45 pm).

Whilst he felt that Udogie, when the ball was played over the top to Gordon before he assisted Isak, ‘wasn’t strong enough’ to deal with the danger.

Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie’s defending

“Tottenham are all over the place defensively,” said Shearer. “Terrible and not strong from Udogie. Porro hasn’t got a clue where Isak is and then he sits van de Ven down. A great finish.

“From Tottenham’s point of view, how poor they are. How weak they are defensively.”

Tottenham’s fullbacks

In truth, for large parts of the season, the duo have been outstanding in this free-flowing and fearless style of play that Postecoglou has brought to north London, it even impressed Wayne Rooney.

Even the most ardent of Spurs fans are aware that defending isn’t Porro’s strength and all his qualities lie going forward.

But Udogie is the more balanced fullback of the two and he has had an outstanding campaign.

Yes, this defeat to Newcastle is one to forget, but it still shouldn’t hide how well the two have performed.

And, at the end of the day, if they respond by beating Arsenal in the north London derby, then that loss to Newcastle will be forgotten about.
