Tottenham Hotspur fans were going through various emotions during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Before a ball was kicked, the talk was about Spurs possibly helping Arsenal win the Premier League title by beating the current champions.

There were many anti-Arsenal chants during the game, including a few home supporters caught doing the Poznan when Erling Haaland opened the scoring.

Ange Postecoglou himself was involved in a heated exchange with a Tottenham supporter as emotions were riding high.

You couldn’t blame the ardent Tottenham fan for struggling to cheer their team, even if a win would have helped them in their Champions League race – in the end, Pep Guardiola’s side got the three points.

Just after Haaland scored, Postecoglou needed to go for it because not even one point was enough for his team, so he made an attacking substitution.

That included hooking off Rodrigo Bentancur and bringing on Dejan Kulusevski, with the Spurs midfielder losing his head at the call.

Peter Drury stated that Bentancur was ‘unimpressed’ and ‘one angry man’ after being taken off, as he also proceeded to kick his chair on several occasions.

Whilst Jamie Carragher understood the 26-year-old’s angry reaction, he stated that his manager needed to make the call in order to win the game, even if he had ‘done well’, as he told Sky Sports (14/05/24 at 9:10 pm).

Rodrigo Bentancur’s angry reaction to substitution

“Rodrigo Bentancur, unimpressed one way or another, with the state of the game or the decision to withdraw him, that is one angry man,” reacted Drury to Bentancur kicking the chair.

Carragher responded: “Listen, he has done well. The tactical set-up was right. But the fact is that Spurs need to win this game, they can’t even afford a draw. They have to win the game, so the manager had to make a change and change somebody in that midfield.

“Obviously, he feels hard done by. But when you think of some of the results Spurs have had of late. You actually think this tactical set-up, if it had come a little earlier, maybe away at Anfield or Newcastle.”

Tottenham’s trip to Sheffield United

The mood doesn’t seem to be pleasant in the Tottenham camp and the season seems to be ending in a dour way ahead of their final game of the campaign away at already-relegated, Sheffield United.

Yet, the team have bettered where they were last season and are set to make a return to Europe, even though they lost Harry Kane in the summer.

Not once have Spurs missed Kane’s goals, which is a compliment to the way Postecoglou has set his team up.

Now it’s a case of Daniel Levy backing the man in the dugout this summer, bulking up the squad, so they can try and earn Champions League football next season.
