Newcastle United dented their European hopes on Saturday by recording a 1-1 draw against Brighton at St James’ Park.
Destiny is still in the hands of Eddie Howe and his players because, if his side win their remaining two matches, then they will secure Europa League football for next season.
But Newcastle United have Chelsea breathing down their necks, especially after their late 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest.
Match of the Day’s analysis on those dropped points at St James’ Park were pretty interesting and embarrassing for some.
Alan Shearer is a club legend, so you know when he is annoyed, then it must be pretty damning.
But Micah Richards and Gary Lineker also couldn’t help but stick the knife in when discussing the actions of two fellow countrymen – Miguel Almiron and Julio Enciso.
The 2024 Olympics are set to take place in Paris in the summer and Lineker suggested that the Paraguayan duo could be participating after their diving antics.
Footage was shown of the Brighton playmaker, with his back to goal, receiving the ball, taking a touch, turning and then just throwing himself to the ground.
Then Almiron followed suit by going to the ground, inside the penalty area, with no contact and trying to win himself a spot-kick.
Micah Richards labelled it all ‘shocking’, whilst Shearer made it clear that it simply isn’t a laughing matter when Lineker was mocking their actions.
Julio Enciso and Miguel Almiron
“The Olympics are coming up this summer and the Paraguayan diving team have a couple of late entries, we think,” said Lineker.
Richards responded: “First one, Julio Enciso. This was absolutely shocking. He goes down two seconds after he collects the ball (receives the ball with his back to goal, controls it, turns and then proceeds to fall to the ground with no one touching him). That is bad. But this is worse, Alan (Shearer). Your man, Almiron. What is he doing? Absolutely shocking. The scores are in (Richards then holds up a notepad with the number 9.4 written on it).”
Shearer stated: “Well, I am not going to protect him. Both of them were terrible. It’s shocking from both players. Terrible, from both of them. Don’t laugh (Shearer tells Lineker).”
Newcastle United’s fight for sixth
It’s still in the hands of Newcastle, who with two Premier League games remaining, are level on points with seventh-placed Chelsea, but they have a better goal difference.
Manchester United host Arsenal on Sunday in a blockbuster Premier League showdown. Three points for Erik ten Hag’s men and they will also be on 57 points.

But given that Man United have a -3 goal difference, recently lost 4-0 to Crystal Palace and have Newcastle coming up next week, then you can rule them out.
If the Magpies can secure sixth here, then it would be a really good campaign given that they have been one of the worst injury-hit teams this season.
