HITC understands that Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign a South American defender this summer.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have been busy in the transfer window already with the club completing the signing of Brazilian Estevao Willian and the free transfer of Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

With PSR being a potential issue for these big sides, these clubs will have to spend smarter to be able to get ahead of the competition this summer but it’s fair to say the Blues have not done that under Todd Boehly’s ownership

The West London club are now understood to have moved on to Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino but his current club are hoping to hold onto the talented Argentine.

Anselmino has been described by TyC Sport as the ‘great jewel of Boca’.

Boca Juniors hope to keep Anselmino but clause may prevent them from doing so

Boca tied Anselmino to a new four-year deal just over a month ago and sources indicated at the time that a previous release clause in the defender’s was removed.

It is now claimed that there is still a clause within his contract or at least some sort of agreement or mechanism that leaves him open to a big approach, although Boca sources insist that is not the case.

These same sources have informed HITC that Chelsea have indeed made an approach to the South American club about a possible summer deal.

Chelsea are seemingly keen on improving their defensive department but with the addition of Adarabioyo, it is hard to see where Anselmino fits in.

The West London club are understood to be willing to allow Trevoh Chalobah to leave the club this summer which could free up space in the squad.

Manchester United remain keen on Anselmino

Chelsea aren’t the only English club interested in the Argentine defender as Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are understood to remain interested.

The Red Devils held talks over a deal for Anselmino earlier this summer but Boca’s stance is that they would rather not sell the teenager this summer.

Boca do not want to see another player leave the club this summer as the South American club are already set to lose Nicolas Valentini, who has just six months left on his contract at the club.
