The new owners at Manchester United have put their faith in Erik ten Hag to lead the club next season.
The Red Devils underwhelmed last season and limped to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League – the worst in the club’s history.
Erik ten Hag‘s poor league results put him on the brink of being sacked, but a remarkable victory over rivals Manchester City saw his side upset the odds to lift the FA Cup.
After deliberating over the summer, Manchester United‘s minority owners Ineos stuck with Ten Hag and offered him a new contract at Old Trafford.
They have now backed him financially in the transfer window with deals for Joshua Zirkzee and exciting young centre-back Leny Yoro already complete.
United remain in talks with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt, with the former Ajax defender unhappy with the German giants for not lowering their asking price.
They also have submitted two bids for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite and have kept Benfica defender Antonio Silva on their radar.
Erik ten Hag ready to experiment with new role
United suffered an injury crisis in defence last season with Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez all spending time on the sidelines.
Therefore, it’s hardly a surprise that United have moved quickly to bolster their defensive department this summer.
However, according to a report from GiveMeSport, Ten Hag is now ready to experiment with Martinez in a new role.
The report suggests that Ten Hag may deploy Martinez in a midfield enforcer role if Casemiro leaves this summer.
He may also fill in as an emergency left-back with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both spending the majority of last season injured.
Manchester United hunt for new midfielder
A defensive-minded midfielder is towards the top of United’s shopping list this summer.
With Casemiro linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, United may be left short in the centre of the park.
Talks are continuing with Paris Saint-Germain for Manuel Ugarte, but progress over the deal has stalled with both clubs unable to agree a suitable fee.
It would be a disaster if United head into the new season without a new midfield signing, but experimenting Martinez there could give Ten Hag another option.
The aggressive Argentine is a favourite at Old Trafford, not only among the fans but also with his teammates – Luke Shaw branded him an “absolute monster” last year.
