Arsenal could be about to pull off one of the most exciting signings of the summer in Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori.
After a very promising tournament with Italy, despite being eliminated at the knockout stages of the competition, Riccardo Calafiori has attracted the attention of some of Europe’s top sides.
Juventus, under Thiago Motta, have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old and HITC reported that they were indeed the favourites for the signing of the Bologna defender.
However, we also reported that a couple of Premier League sides, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, were keen and it appears a move to England could be in the offing.
Expert explains why Arsenal’s move for Calafiori is ‘a benefit’
Despite Juventus, who are one of the biggest sides in Italy, being in the race for his signature, Fabrizo Ponciroli believes that a move to the Emirates Stadium could be beneficial for his career.
“If a top Premier League club calls you, how can you say no,” Ponciroli told TuttoMercatoWeb.
“I don’t want to exaggerate, but we’re talking about the best league in the world with the best players in the world.
“If I’m strong, I’m strong and I show it. Calafiori is very good to go to the Premier League and if he does well with Arsenal he will prove to be a champion for the present and future of the national team. I’m sorry not to see him in Italy anymore, but it would be the right choice.”
There have not been many successful Italian exports to the Premier League in recent seasons but the signing of the defender would surely buck that trend.
Chiesa sale would be the ‘right choice’
Another Italian player who could make the move to England is winger Federico Chiesa with HITC reporting that Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested.
Ponciroli believes the time is right to sell Chiesa: “On Chiesa I gave him a lot of chances, when he’s on the day for me he’s the strongest Italian player, but he showed 4-5 phenomenal games, the other games were anything but.
“If Giuntoli makes this choice, he does it because he can’t rely on a player who plays one game as a phenomenon and ten as an ectoplasm. I think the sale of Chiesa is the right choice for the club and for the player.”
